My dear friend

The cheque surprised me yesterday. I had not thought of your sending it in advance but, it is very welcome. Yet after all, not so welcome as the spirit that made you send it—

Here is the proof—I would have sent it before, but Clarke has been ill ever since I last wrote & I could think of nothing else— He is a little better this morning— I think the attack was partly from cold & partly confinement— Annie will understand why I do not answer her letter to-day. I will as soon as I can, it was almost like a loving gasp of her hand.

Clarke bids me say how sorry he is he has not been able to see about that book. In a day or two, he will, he hopes to be himself again.

I am so glad you like The Wife’s Story.

With best love from us to all in the ‘hut by the room’

R. H. D.
