Description

To ANNIE ADAMS FIELDS

May 15, [1862], Wheeling

Certainly my dear Mrs Fields. If I go I will go to you first.[1] Thank you for telling me exactly what you would like. If I can come I will be there the first or second week in June. But I am not very sanguine about going at all from home this summer owing to my father’s health,[2] which is so uncertain as to prevent my making even positive engagements. I mean to hope for the best however and if the minor trouble of sufficient escort can be surmounted will go directly from Baltimore to you. I write in haste to catch the mail.

Yours very sincerely

R.B. Harding

[1] Jessie Benton Frémont and Fields were competing for the first visit from RHD. She would ultimately split her visits: first to the Frémonts' home, then the Fieldses', and back to the Frémonts'.
